Switzerland grants protection and residence to people who are exposed to serious persecution in their country of origin due to their ethical affiliation, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, or who are unable to return for other humanitarian reasons. These are examined during the asylum procedure. The new asylum procedure came into force in Switzerland in March 2019. From this point on, procedures are accelerated and decentralised into federal asylum centres. Asylum seekers processed under the new procedures also receive advice and legal representation. The webpage informs about the most important steps of the procedure:

  • Asylum application
  • Preparatory phase
  • The Dublin procedure
  • Accelerated asylum procedure
  • Extended procedure
  • Asylum decision: Protection status or expulsion
  • Appeal against the asylum decision
  • Special cases: Humanitarian visa or resettlement program
