Alcohol is a cell toxin that crosses the placental barrier via the mother’s bloodstream during pregnancy and can cause severe and permanent harm to the unborn child. The resulting conditions are collectively referred to as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). With complete abstinence from alcohol and other harmful substances during pregnancy, FASD is 100% preventable.
